A warmer welcome for Middlemore’s tiniest patients
We’re pleased to share that 10 new infant warmers are now in use at Middlemore Hospital, thanks to a generous grant from the Four Winds Foundation.
Around 10,000 babies are born at Middlemore each year. As one of the busiest maternity hospitals in Aotearoa, Middlemore also cares for the majority of complex and high-risk births in the region.
For one Middlemore whaanau, the arrival of a new baby was extra special. After welcoming three beloved boys, Ara-Moana’s mum was delighted to welcome her little girl into the world.
Ara-Moana is pictured here using one of Middlemore Hospital’s new Panda Radiant Infant Warmers, which help provide a stable, warm environment for newborns in those important first moments after birth.
Dr Katherine Sowden, Clinical Leader of Gynaecology explains that for babies born prematurely or at a low birthweight, maintaining a stable body temperature is particularly important. Newborns can lose heat quickly, which can increase the risk of complications and put additional stress on an already vulnerable baby.
The new Panda Radiant Infant Warmers provide a stable thermal environment while giving clinical teams easy access to babies for monitoring, oxygen support and resuscitation when needed. The design also makes it easier for staff to provide care at the bedside and supports parents to stay close to their baby.
