An incredible $2500 fundraised by HOPIN’s Fishing Competition

Updated: May 28, 2019

In early December 2018, Paddy O’Leary from Whangarei was tragically involved in a spinal incident and admitted to the Auckland Spinal Rehabilitation Unit. Paddy has been a member of HOPIN Inc (Northland Division of Hospitality NZ) for over 20 years.

Each year HOPIN Inc host an annual fishing competition to raise funds for charity. This year the incredible $2500 raised from the fish auction was donated to the Spinal Unit on behalf of their dear friend Paddy O’Leary to show appreciation for the excellent treatment, care and support he received during his 5-month stay in the spinal unit. Paddy is delighted that the proceeds will be supporting the organisation who have looked after him during his rehabilitation journey.

The auction was a great success and had amazing support from a mixture of tourists and locals who turned up to purchase some of the fresh catches caught in the fishing tournament. As many as 74 anglers donated their catches to the ‘fish auction’ including one boat that donated all 14 crayfish caught, with one ‘packhorse cray’ going for $170. We are extremely grateful to the locals and event organisers that donated their time to make this event happen.

The team at HOPIN are very thankful to all the staff at the Auckland Spinal Rehabilitation Unit who care for and assist patients with spinal injuries.
