When Meliame and Tevita learned they were expecting their first child, their hearts were full of hope. Every scan showed a healthy, happy baby. But the day Kalolaine arrived, everything changed.
Born blind, hard of hearing, and with complex medical needs, little Kalolaine’s start to life was nothing her parents could have prepared for. Yet, they’ll both tell you the same thing with a smile: “Kalolaine is such a blessing. We are so lucky to be her parents.”
Those early years were incredibly hard. Kalolaine spent more time in hospital than at home. She can’t tell her parents when she is sick or in pain. “That’s the hardest part,” says Dad, Tevita. “I just want to help my baby, to keep her safe.
Through every challenge, Kidz First Community has walked beside them. Thanks to our donors Kalolaine has the specialised equipment and sensory tools that she needs.
“We are so grateful for all of the help we have been given.” says Mum, Meliame.
Now three, Kalolaine is a ray of sunshine, smiling, learning, and growing stronger every day. “We love going to the Kidz First play groups, because before that, we thought we were the only family with a baby like Kaloaine.” says Meliame.
Dame Valerie found a beautiful connection with the Kalolaine not only as a medical parent herself but also their shared family ties in Tonga. Highlighting how families just like yours could need the support of Kidz First Community in the year ahead. This Christmas, your generosity brings hope, love, and the spirit of the season to families like Kalolaine’s. Even just for one day.
